Utah Turquoise & Varasite Mines
Turquoise Mine List | Grades & Quality | Healing Beliefs | Physical Properties | Spiritual Beliefs | Symbolism | USGS History | General Information | Other Gemstones

Example Pictures are not necessarily the highest of grade, rather a good example of a common look from a particular mine.

Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

One of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, Kennecott's Bingham Canyon mine is located about twenty miles southwest of downtown Salt Lake, in the Oquirrh mountains. This mine is one of the only turquoise mines we know of in utah, which we find odd for such a perfect geological location.

Utah Variscite
Here is a great stone from the great state of Utah. This state does not have very many deposits of turquoise, but has a few deposits of variscite. Variscite is a very rare cousin of turquoise and in our opinion a superior stone to turquoise, just ask any cutter. Variscite is very hard to come buy and those of us who have some don’t turn loose of it. Utah variscite was the largest producer and filled the market several years ago. Except for old stashes of this material you will not find any. Of course who knows, the next guy with a bulldozer may find some. Maybe the motherlode is waiting to be found. But as for now it is hard to come by. Some of our favorite material, especially the Fairfield material.

Example Pictures are not necessarily the highest of grade, rather a good example of a common look from a particular mine.

I will continue to add to this list and eventually attempt to have a listing of all turquoise mines that have existed in Utah. I need your help! If you know of another legitimate mining operation or old mine claim in Utah, contact me at: jeweler@durangosilver.com
